SRI LANKA: IFEX MEMBERS CALL FOR UN ACTION
24 June 2008 - Alarmed by statements from Sri Lankan authorities threatening journalists,
31 IFEX members and partners signed a joint letter on 20 June asking for
United Nations action. The letter to Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,
initiated by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), says the
statements "put journalists in grave danger."

SYRIA: 35 IFEX MEMBERS AND PARTNERS DEMAND END TO HARASSMENT
OF RIGHTS ACTIVISTS
8 April 2008 - The director of a free expression group in
Syria is facing a military court trial this month. Thirty-five members
and partners of IFEX and the Arab Working Group, which monitors media freedom around elections,
have appealed directly to President Bashar al-Assad to drop the charges against him and to end the ongoing
harassment of human rights activists and organisations.

1 April 2008 - The top UN rights body passed two resolutions last week that limit freedom of expression rather than protect it, say IFEX members, even further undermining its mandate.

SRI LANKA: IFJ LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN TO "STOP THE WAR ON JOURNALISTS"
1 April 2008 - Sri Lanka has relinquished its role as "keeper of the peace" for failing to prevent attacks on journalists
and to bring those responsible to account, say 40 organisations, the majority of them IFEX members. Led by the
International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), the 40 groups have joined forces in an international campaign to "stop the war on journalists"
in the conflict-ridden country.

Bahrain: Release human rights
defenders, say 55 rights groups
26 February 2008 - Twenty-one IFEX members are among 55 rights groups worldwide calling
on the Bahraini authorities to immediately release the dozens of human rights activists and demonstrators
who were "unjustly" detained following protests in December.

SOMALIA: IFEX MEMBERS DEMAND PROTECTION FOR JOURNALISTS
26 February 2008 - Amid a backdrop of daily shootouts between Islamist insurgents,
warlords and Ethiopian-backed Somali government forces, 27 IFEX members are demanding that
the Somali government protect its journalists and end its own repression of the media.

KENYA: GOVERNMENT IMPOSES NEWS BLACKOUT
14 January 2008 - The Media Institute in Kenya and 22 other
IFEX members have condemned the Kenyan government's decision to ban
live TV and radio broadcasts in response to post-election violence. The government announced the indefinite live broadcast ban on 30 December,
as violent protests erupted after President Mwai Kibaki was re-elected for
another five years amid allegations of vote-rigging.

The Gambia: 21 IFEX MEMBERS DEMAND INVESTIGATION INTO EDITOR'S MURDER
18 December 2007 - 16 December 2007 is the third anniversary of the brutal killing of Gambian
journalist Deyda Hydara. While family members and colleagues marked the occasion
by marching from his home to his grave, 21 IFEX members, in a joint action led
by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), demanded that the Gambian
authorities "enforce justice" and set up an independent investigation into his
murder.

27 IFEX members express concern about state of emergency measures against the media during political crisis
in Pakistan
13 November 2007 - Three U.K. reporters from "The Daily Telegraph" have been expelled from Pakistan after an "offensive" editorial was published last week, adding to the political crisis in the country.

26 IFEX MEMBERS SLAM BAHRAINI GOVERNMENT'S LATEST ATTACK ON FREE EXPRESSION
13 November 2007 - Journalist and editor convicted of criminal defamation. Popular film banned. Women's rights defender forbidden from appearing in media. These were just some of the headlines last month in Bahrain, where the right to freedom of expression has been recently targeted and curtailed. Twenty-six IFEX members and 21 other organisations,
led by Bahrain Center for Human Rights (BCHR), are demanding that the authorities stop their latest clampdown on free expression.

AZERBAIJAN: 27 IFEX MEMBERS SUPPORT
MEMORIAL FOR SLAIN JOURNALIST
6 November 2007 - Twenty-six IFEX members are supporting the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety's call for a
memorial to slain editor Elmar Huseynov, who is now considered a national hero, to be erected
in Azerbaijan's capital, Baku. They are urging the Azeri government to back
the initiative, which would send a strong and much needed message about its
commitment to democracy and respect for human rights.
